Mafia Game Rules: The Complete Rulebook (2026)

This is the reference rulebook for Mafia as played on Mafiagg. Where the classic party game leaves things to the narrator, these rules spell out what actually happens, in the order it happens.

Table size and Mafia count

A game needs 5 to 25 players. The Mafia count is about 28% of the table, never below 1 and soft-capped at 30%. Exactly: 5–6 players have 1 Mafia, 7–9 have 2, 10–13 have 3, 14–16 have 4, 17–19 have 5, 20–23 have 6 and 24–25 have 7. The full table is below.

Mafia roles are dealt in a fixed order as the crew grows: Killer, then a second Killer, then Godfather, Framer, a third Killer, Consigliere and Silencer. Town power roles unlock by lobby size: Detective and Doctor at 5, Bodyguard at 11, Vigilante at 14, Second Detective at 20, Jester at 25. Everyone else is a Citizen.

Night: action order

Night lasts 35 seconds. Every night action is submitted privately and resolved together in this priority order, lowest first:

  • 1. Framer marks a target as "Mafia" for tonight's investigations
  • 2. Doctor protects one player (may self-protect, never the same person two nights in a row)
  • 3. Bodyguard guards one player and dies in their place if attacked
  • 4. Consigliere learns one player's exact role
  • 5. Detective and Second Detective each learn "Mafia" or "Not Mafia" (the Godfather always reads Not Mafia)
  • 6. Mafia kill: the Killers and Godfather agree on one victim; the kill fails against a protected or guarded target
  • 7. Vigilante may fire one of a limited number of shots; the target dies unless protected
  • 8. Silencer gags one player for the next day (may gag themselves as a bluff)

Dawn

The narrator announces each death by name. Roles of the dead are not revealed until the game ends. If the Doctor saved the Mafia's target, the narrator announces that the night was quiet; neither the Doctor nor the town is told who was targeted. Dead players move to a listen-only lounge with its own chat and voice.

Day: discussion

Discussion runs 30 seconds plus 10 per living player, clamped between 60 and 180 seconds. A silenced player cannot speak or type during the day but still votes. The narrator warns at 10, 5, 3, 2 and 1 seconds remaining.

Day: voting and skips

Voting runs 20 seconds plus 4 per living player, between 30 and 75 seconds. Each living player votes for one name or SKIP; not voting counts as a skip. A strict majority for one player sends them to a 5-second last defense, then they are eliminated. A majority for SKIP ends the day with no elimination and spends one point of the town's skip budget.

When the skip budget is exhausted, a plurality is enough to eliminate. A tie between candidates triggers a 15-second runoff between the tied players only. The eliminated player's role stays hidden.

Win conditions

Checked after every death: the town wins when no Mafia remain; the Mafia win when living Mafia are at least as many as living non-Mafia. The Jester wins alone the instant the town votes them out, and the game ends. A Vigilante who shoots a townsperson simply loses a town member, there is no extra penalty beyond the loss itself.

Voice and conduct rules

Everyone joins muted and unmutes to speak. Dead players cannot speak to the living. Mafia share a private night channel. The host may kick a player from the lobby; every player can report or block another from their profile. Games in public rooms with 5 or more real players count toward the ranked ladder.

Roles by number of players

Roles are dealt automatically when the game starts, based on how many players are seated. Table bots count as players. The host can switch any special town role off in the lobby, and that seat is dealt as a Citizen instead.
